Actually, I think you may have these reversed. The “before” picture looked pretty familar. It’s Boston.

The “after” pic is actually the OLD Interstate 93 viaduct. A few years ago, they tore down the elevated highway, and converted it to a tunnel. This was “the big dig” project that made nationwide headlines for taking a LOT more time and money to build than expected.

The finished product is what you have listed as the “before” pic. The two surface streets that were there before are still there. The part in the middle, where the highway once stood, is now a series of (weirdly-shaped) parks and pedestrian plazas. To the bottom left of your “before” pic, you can see an exit ramp coming up from the underground highway.

Here’s a Google Map satellite view — as long as the link works properly, you’ll notice that big pedestrian plaza with the red bricks and the circular arrangement of trees.

If the link doesn’t work for you, just search for the corner of Atlantic Ave and High Street in Boston. Turn on the street labels, and you’ll see the yellow line for I-93 there, but you won’t see the highway because it’s underground. Follow south and you’ll see 93 emerge from the ground at Kneeland Street. Going north, the tunnel continues right up until the last possible moment where it has to rise up for the Bunker Hill Bridge, which carries I-93 over the Charles River.

Even with the street labels turned off, it’s pretty easy to tell where I-93 runs because there’s a wide strip without any buildings.

    Hey BobRoss!

That’s an impressive observation, you must be from the Boston area eh? I grew up in VA and NY myself (now residing in Ontario).

I had a feeling the pictures might be reversed just because the ‘before’ shot is more modern looking- wasn’t sure. I appreciate the correction though!

Aside from this one, what do you think of the site overall? Is there anything you would suggest, or like to see done like a specific category or anything?

We just got the site up recently so we’re still ironing out the wrinkles obviously, but any user feedback would be much appreciated!

Thanks again for the correction (and your link works like a charm!)

    Owen
